Massive and mysterious habitats exist in the depths of the ocean, and capturing them poses a slew of challenges for avid photographers. The Underwater Photographer of the Year celebrates those that shoot beneath the surface of the ocean, lakes and rivers.
More than an incredible 5,500 underwater pictures were entered in 13 categories by underwater photographers from across 70 countries around the world. Greg Lacoeur travels the world documenting life in the oceans, and was crowned Underwater Photographer of the Year 2020 for his “Frozen Mobile Home”.
Lacoeur travelled to Antarctica on a small yacht, enabling him to capture the amazing wildlife on icebergs as they drift at the whim of polar currents.
According to Lacoeur:
“Little is known about how wildlife thrives around these mobile homes. Icebergs fertilize the oceans by carrying nutrients from land that spark blooms of marine life and also provide homes for larger animals, like these crabeater seals.”
Now in its fourth year, the Underwater Photographer of the Year competition also aims to highlight new photographic talent.
