The Nikon D6 is set to replace the D5, Nikon’s flagship DLSR which is aimed at professional news and sports photographers. Competing with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, it represents the pinnacle of DSLR development. Here’s what we know about the Nikon D6 so far…
The D6 is designed to be used every day in the utmost harshest of environments by photographers who need a fast, reliable camera. It’s also a full-frame model, meaning that its 20.8Mp sensor has the very same dimensions as a 35mm film frame.

Release date and price
The best in DSLR development comes at a price, just like its predecessor, the Nikon D5 and the new Canon counterpart, the D6 isn’t going to be cheap! The Nikon D6 will begin shipping in April 2020 and cost £6,299.
Autofocus
Nikon has promised a completely revamped autofocus system, delivering what the company promises as a much faster and more precise AF system. The D6 features a 105-point all cross-type system with every single point now selectable individually.
Nikon also boasts that, “The D6 is the first DSLR to let you prioritize focusing on your subject’s eyes when using Auto-Area AF or 3D tracking.”
Slower shutter speeds
Let’s slow it down, not every professional photographer wants to go faster. The Nikon D5 had a slowest shutter speed of 30 seconds, whereas the D6 can shoot at a shutter speed of 900 seconds – that’s 15 minutes!
CFexpress support
The dual card slots featured on the Nikon D6 supports both CFexpress and XQD – two formats that offer incredible speeds for both reading / writing and image transfer, especially compared to CFast, or SD cards.
CRexpress in itself is a newer and more affordable format. Professional photographers will be able to find more cards available from more manufacturers.
Image delivery
If you’re using a Nikon D6 day-to-day, chances are you’re a professional and that means that you need to send your images quickly. The D6 has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and is compatible with Nikon’s WT-6 Wireless Transmitter.
The built-in GPS will also tag your images with location data.
Although official, extensive hands-on reviews are yet to launch for the Nikon D6, we have no doubt that it’ll be a fitting competitor for Canon. The biggest takeaway from the initial launch specification and information is that the Nikon D6 is definitely not “just the same as the D5”!
